Home Ownership
At He Tohu Kāinga, we believe everyone should be able to save towards home ownership, without compromising their finances. We aim to support whānau by providing affordable rentals and actively work with whānau to save money each week. As part of the He Tohu Kāinga tenancy, whānau will be actively saving up to 20% of the median market rent, for that money to be returned to them at the end of their three-year tenancy either into KiwiSaver or for a home deposit.
Being apart of our Affordable Rental Programme, provides whānau unlimited access to our financial advisory services at no expense to them during their time with He Tohu Kāinga. Our advisors work 1 on 1 with whānau to ensure they are financially literate, can handle unexpected costs and are on the right pathway to owning their own home. Seminars and workshops are also frequently held with our kāinga whānau. Our financial advisors can also consult whānau on their Kiwi Saver, insurances, and act as a mortgage broker.
Housing
He Tohu Kāinga will support whānau residing on the our Kāinga Māori. Our first Kāinga Māori - Tūkōkeke comprises of eight 1 bedroom units, five 2 bedroom houses, and two 3 bedroom houses.
He Tohu Kāinga Kāinga Māori succeeds because it is built on a holistic, culturally grounded approach that nurtures ora, connection, and capability for all whānau who call it home. Its success is driven by an interwoven set of supports and environments that uplift individual and collective wellbeing.
Whānau will have access to a maara—both communal and private to empower whānau to grow their own kai, learn sustainable gardening practices, and build self-sufficiency. Shared maara activities bring residents together, reinforcing collective responsibility and mātauranga Māori traditions related to whenua, kai, and seasonal cycles.
