KAWAREHE KAINGA MĀORI – 16 new Affordable Rental Homes Under Development!!
Following on from the opening of our Tūkōkeke Kāinga at Golf Links Rd, in partnership with Kawarehe Trust, Adventure Solutionz and Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngāti Awa, we are pleased to announce the commencement of the infrastructure and build programme for Kawarehe Kainga Māori at Huna Rd Whakatane.
Having completed archaeological surveys to the satisfaction of Heritage NZ a further karakia was carried out last week with the Trustees of Kawarehe and key stakeholders witnessing the formal process of “turning the sod”.
Stage 1 will consist of 16 Affordable Rental homes worth an estimated cost of $10.4m. Funded by Ministry of Housing Urban Development and the Kawarehe Trust the project will be completed by June 2026.
Building Plans incorporate the relocation of the existing Lawson Homestead from its current site over looking the Paroa Rugby grounds to another part of the site to create a central community hub for the overall development. The homestead will be surrounded by park-like features and a further:
•4 x 2-bedroom duplex (8 units)
•3 x 3-bedroom standalone homes
•1 x 3-bedroom duplex (2 units)
•2 x 4-bedroom standalone homes
The Affordable Housing programme is a hand up toward home ownership. This is a subsidized rental programme that is targeted at whanau who are working and on a pathway toward home ownership. Whanau are able to apply to the tenancy management company He Tohu Kainga www.hetohukainga.org.nz. for occupancy of homes. There is an existing waiting list so whanau are encouraged to get in early.
